Most of you are familiar with the advice columns that appear regularly in newspapers. As I read the most recent one in my local newspaper, I began to think about what kind of advice I would give a young lady new in her walk with the Lord. This is how I would write the advice column.

Young lady’s question:

Dear Older Woman in Christ:

I am a new Christian. What kind of advice can you give me on how to mature in my Christian life?

Signed, Young Christian Lady

Advice Columnist’s response:

Dear Young Christian Lady:

First of all, there is a passage of scripture found in Titus 2:3-5Titus 2:3-5
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

3 that aged women likewise be reverent in demeanor, not slanderers nor enslaved to much wine, teachers of that which is good; 4 that they may train the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, 5 [to be] sober-minded, chaste, workers at home, kind, being in subjection to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed:

that adequately gives me guidance on how I should respond to this question. It admonishes me (as an older woman) to instruct you to do the following:

  1. To be sober (quiet or sedate in demeanor)
  2. To love your husband;
  3. To love your children;
  4. To be discreet (judicious in one’s conduct or speech, especially with regard to respecting privacy or maintaining silence about something of a delicate nature);
  5. Chaste (undefiled, pure);
  6. Keepers at home (taking care of your household);
  7. Good; and
  8. Obedient to their own husbands.

These steps to godly living will not ensure that everything will always go as you expect, but as long as you strive to follow the instructions found in this passage, you will become a mature Christian woman.

Signed, Older Christian Woman
