have you heardWhat is gossip? According to the dictionary it is casual or unconstrained conversation or reports about other people, typically involving details that are not confirmed as being true.

Have you ever played the gossip game? The first person whispers information into the ear of the next person. Individuals down the line continue to feed the information to each other. By the time it reaches the end and is repeated out loud, it is often distorted with facts either added or deleted from the original statement.

chastises gossip: “being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice;they are gossips.”

This poem by an unknown author best illustrates gossip:

Nobody’s Friend

My name is Gossip.

I have no respect for justice.

I maim without killing.

I break hearts and ruin lives.

I am cunning and malicious and gather strength with age.

The more I am quoted the more I am believed.

My victims are helpless. They cannot protect themselves against me because I have no name

and no face.

To track me down is impossible. The harder you try, the more elusive I become.

I am nobody’s friend.

Once I tarnish a reputation, it is never the same.

I topple governments and wreck marriages.

I ruin careers and cause sleepless nights, heartaches and indigestion. I make innocent people cry in their pillows.

Even my name hisses.

I am called Gossip.

I make headlines and headaches.

Before you repeat a story, ask yourself:

Is it true?

Is it harmless?

Is it necessary?

If it isn’t, don’t repeat it.

Before you share gossip, one question to answer is: “How would you feel if the gossip was about you? As stated by an unknown author, “When your feet slips, you can always recover your balance but when you tongue slips you cannot recover your words.” We should strive to be better stewards of our words!

Don’t gossip!
