Salty Christian

Salt is a very valuable ingredient in our daily lives. It is a processing aid for some industries and the means by which animal nutrition experts ensure the health and productivity of livestock and poultry. We are all familiar with the salt shaker on the kitchen table (sometimes too familiar) in most of our homes. What would most baked goods taste like without salt? We use salt in our water softeners to protect the pipes and appliances in our homes. And if you live in a snowy part of the country, you should be thankful for the salt that the road maintenance crews apply to keep our cars, trucks and school buses safe on snowy winter roads.

As you can see, salt has many uses and qualities.

I. Salt Cleanses

The prophet Elisha used salt to cleanse the water as stated in II Kings 2:20-22: “’Bring me a new bowl’, he said, ‘and put salt in it’. So they brought it to him. Then he went out to the spring and threw the salt into it, saying,‘This is what the LORD says: I have healed this water. Never again will it cause death or make the land unproductive.’ And the water has remained pure to this day, according to the word Elisha had spoken.“ The Israelites  also bathed newborn babies in salt.

II. Salt Seasons

Spiritual salt should season our conversation and back up our Christian testimony. Colossians 4:6Colossians 4:6
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

6 Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer each one.

WP-Bible plugin
states, “Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” This is one instance when salt may be used in unlimited amounts without causing physical problems such as high blood pressure.

III. Salt Deices

Ice on our porch steps is like the “ice-bound heart” which is hardened as a rock because of years of bitterness, back-biting and other ungodly characteristics. Mark 9:50Mark 9:50
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

50 Salt is good: but if the salt have lost its saltness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace one with another.

WP-Bible plugin
tells us “Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can you make it salty again? Have salt among yourselves, and be at peace with each other.” This spiritual salt should be used generously to minister to hardened hearts of those around us.

Matthew 5:13Matthew 5:13
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost its savor, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out and trodden under foot of men.

WP-Bible plugin
: “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. Christians are “the salt of the earth” and the Bible warns us of losing our savor.

The next time you see a grain of salt think about the many ways that you can be a “salty Christian”.
