The Gift Goes On

As I was listening to a song entitled “The Gift Goes On” by Sandi Patti, a well renowned Christian artist, I was reminded of how the Father gave us His greatest gift of all, Jesus Christ. Step by step this gift was handed down and we can give the gift of love to others.

1.  The Father Gave the Son Luke 2:7Luke 2:7
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

7 And she brought forth her firstborn son; and she wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

states: “And she gave birth to her firstborn son, and she wrapped Him in cloths and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.” What a great gift!

2.  The Father Gave the Spirit – If Jesus had not gone away, the Comforter (Spirit) could not have come. “But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper shall not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.” John 16:7John 16:7
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth: It is expedient for you that I go away; for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I go, I will send him unto you.

3.  The Spirit Gives Us Life – The song goes on to tell us that the Spirit then gives us life. This is found in II Corinthians 4:6 (listed below).

4.  We Can Give the Gift of Love – “By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” – John 13:35John 13:35
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

. This gift of love can be given in so many ways – even in ways that do not cost anything other than perhaps your time and attention.

5.  Love Each Other – Sometimes the hardest part is to love each other. We all have different personalities, opinions and ideas. How can I possibly love someone who is different from me? Perhaps they are of a different ethnic background or nationality. Perhaps they are of a different economic status than me. Perhaps they are of a different religion. Two passages of scripture that best illustrate this commission to love each other is found in I John 4:7John 4:7
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.

and Colossians 3:14Colossians 3:14
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

14 and above all these things [put on] love, which is the bond of perfectness.

(both listed below).

So, as the song states, the gift goes on. As we let the love of the Son (the perfect gift) reign in our hearts, we should not let the gift stop. We should continue to give it.

Love isn’t love until you give it away – let’s give it away all during the year!

II Corinthians 4:6 – Who also made us adequate as servants of a new covenant, not of the letter, but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit give life.

I John 4:7John 4:7
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.

– Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and every one who loves is born of God and knows God.

Colossians 3:14Colossians 3:14
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

14 and above all these things [put on] love, which is the bond of perfectness.

– And beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity.
